Pet pig found wandering near Bathgate
An animal charity is seeking the owner of a black pig that has been roaming the West Lothian countryside for two weeks or more.
Local resident Lynne Farquharson discovered the young boar wandering on the grass verge of an unclassified road near the B8028 between Armadale and Bathgate, on the morning of Monday, February 13.
Lynne was able to herd the pig onto her property in Bridgecastle and into her hay barn before calling the Scottish SPCA for help. The pig, who bears no identification tags or tattoos, has been named Cupid.
Senior Inspector Stuart Murray said: "Initial enquiries have revealed that this pig has been on the loose since January 29 and possibly before.
"He is a young neutered male who is quite lame but otherwise in good bodily condition.
"The fact that he does not have any identification marks suggests that he may have been kept as a pet.
"Pigs have become fashionable pets in recent times, but a cute little piglet can soon grow into a large and boisterous adult pig and this can result in the animal being abandoned.
"We don't know whether Cupid has escaped from home or been abandoned, but either way we are keen to track down his owner."
Ms Farquharson, who is currently caring for Cupid while the Scottish SPCA makes arrangements to have him moved in line with pig transportation regulations, said: "He's a lovely big creature who seems very relaxed around my horses and chickens so maybe he's lived on a farm before.
"As much as he loves my horses, they are scared of him, so unfortunately I can't keep him myself."
Anyone who recognises Cupid is encouraged to call the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
