Police warn Bathgate shoppers after fake notes discovered in town
18 AugustShoppers and retailers in Bathgate have been warned to be on their guard after local police were alerted to a number of incidents of counterfeit notes in the town.
Lothian and Borders Police are warning shop owners in West Lothian to be extra vigilant when checking bank notes after fake Royal Bank of Scotland £20 and £10 notes, and Bank of England £20 notes were found in the area.
The notes were used at two different stores in Bathgate on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th August.
A police spokesperson said: "We are urging all shop workers to double-check any notes being handed over in transactions at the moment. In particular, we would remind them to look at the paper quality, print quality, metallic security thread and the watermark.
"If you suspect you have been given a fake bank note, seize it and hand it to police for investigation. If you don't know where it has come from, take it to the relevant local bank. It is a criminal offence to hold or pass on a note that you know to be counterfeit."
